There are many design aspects for the Apple Watch, but today I’d to simply look at themes for this new market. First of all, the Apple Watch interface has a black background since it’s easy on the eyes and battery consumption:
This, I believe, is the foundation to all themes emerging from the Apple Watch world. Even when thinking about companion iPhone apps for the Apple Watch, following a consistent look and feel is important. Take a look at Apple’s new activity app for the iPhone, a companion app for the Apple Watch:
It follows the same dark backgrounds and high contrasts as the Apple Watch. There’s something more to this..
The Da Vinci Code
The features and interfaces that come from Apple are very intentional and have proven to be very innovative and trends-setting, both technically and artistically. Today, I’d like to point your attention to the new Apple Watch App Store you see on your iPhone:
It’s interesting that Apple would break away from their traditional theme and pick a dark theme. It makes sense though because of the watch interface being dark backgrounds with high contrast icons, images, etc.
Now here’s the amazing part… On your iPhone, go to the accessibility options and select inverse colors in: Settings > General > Accessibility > Invert Colors. Here’s what you get:
It’s the same theme as the Apple Watch App Store!! Apple chose the exact inverse colors of the iPhone theme to derive theme guidelines for the Apple Watch companion apps. Knowing this fact acts as a guideline for creating iPhone companion apps for me. I’ve submitted 2 Apple Watch apps to the App Store and currently working on my third one using this same guidelines for themes going forward:
I hope you like 🙂
ENJOY!!
